SUMMARY:Writing Short Fiction\, with Catherine Smith
DESCRIPTION:Do you enjoy reading short stories …and would you like to write them? In this six-week course\, we’ll explore how a short story – ‘The art of the glimpse’ – can begin with a dream\, a memory\, a single image\, a fragment of overheard conversation….and we’ll look at how to structure\, plot and edit them so that they’re small but polished gems. We’ll read and reflect on different types of published short story\, both contemporary and ‘classic’ and learn from ‘giants’ of the form. \nCatherine Smith writes poetry\, fiction and radio drama. Three full poetry collections and two pamphlets have been published to date and she was included in the ‘Next Generation’ promotion (Arts Council/PBS) of ‘the twenty most exhilarating new poets in the UK.’ Two of her poetry collections\, The New Bride (2000) and Lip (2008) were short-listed for The Forward Prize. Her poetry and short fiction have been widely anthologised\, and broadcast on BBC Radio. She has also undertaken fiction commissions for the BBC.  In collaboration with Lewes Live Literature\, she adapted three of her short stories\, about secrets and their consequences\, from her collection\, The Biting Point\, and her pamphlet length narrative poem\, The New Cockaigne\,  for  Live Literature performances. She is currently working on a new flash fiction/prose poetry project\, and a novella. She also teaches for The Arvon Foundation and The Poetry School. www.catherinesmithwriter.co.uk \nThe short story is a marvellously flexible\, muscular and adventurous genre. It’s been around\, in various forms\, for thousands of years\, and appeals to writers who love making ‘every word count.’ A short story may be as long as 10\,000 words\, or as short as 100. In this six-week course\, we’ll explore how short stories ‘work’ and experiment with strategies for writing them. Examples from published fiction will be provided. \n  \nWeek One – Lighting the fuse – where might short stories come from?\nWhat themes\, ideas and/or obsessions do you really want to explore in your stories? ‘Conventional wisdom on short story –  do’s and don’ts.’ A guide to basic Aristotelian plot structure – the four element approach. \nWeek Two – Made Up People.\nCreating three dimensional fictional characters – swiftly – and exploring their motivations. How do we ‘get them onto the page’ – and show them changing? We’ll also look at dialogue; what do characters say\, how do they say it…what aren’t they saying? \nWeek Three – Who’s telling this story?\nWho’s telling this story? The author? An anonymous narrator? A character from within the story? We’ll explore the freedoms and limitations of different narrative perspectives (points of view) and experiment with writing a scene from different viewpoints. \nWeek Four – Where to start?\nAt the beginning\, or later? How to continue/develop? Where to end? Looking at some different ways of handling narrative time and story structure. ‘Writing on from first lines’ and ‘Writing towards a last line.’ \nWeek Five – Imagery and symbolism\nImagery and symbolism; what are they\, and how can short story writers deploy them powerfully in their work? How can a metaphor/image be extended as a way of shaping a story? How can an object\, colour\, sound or smell be used to pull a story together? \nWeek Six – Cut\, cut\, cut\nCut\, cut cut\, (said Chekov). Writing is re-writing; we’ll look at how to edit\, how to sculpt\, change\, and cut where necessary to make our stories as clear and polished as possible. \nWe’ll also look at the current ‘market’ for short stories and discuss how to send our stories out into the wider world. \nDuring the course\, we’ll look at a variety of examples of the genre\, from a fairy tale to contemporary\, cutting edge short fiction. Home assignments will be set each week and there will be opportunities to share your work with the group and to receive constructive feedback\, from the tutor and from your peers. You’ll also be encouraged to read widely and to share your findings and recommendations with the group. \nA limited number of bursary places are available for this workshop for writers who cannot afford the full price. Please email hello@newwritingsouth.com for details.

SUMMARY:Crossing the Finish Line: How to Complete Your Novel\, with William Shaw
DESCRIPTION:A practical\, intensive short course designed to give momentum to those who have already come some way into writing a long fiction project. Alongside advice on structure\, story\, character\, dialogue and location\, we’ll explore ways in which we can re-energise and refine your writing process to help you to finally carry the ball over the line. Towards the end of the course we’ll explore the practicalities of re-writing and editing\, and of preparing a draft to send out to agents. You’ll be expected to do some short practical writing exercises during the classes\, so please bring whatever you feel most comfortable working with. \nWilliam Shaw has written eight crime fiction novels; the latest is Grave’s End. The Times calls him “a superb\, flowing writer”; The Sun says he’s “one of the best authors in Brit crime fiction’s new wave”. His work has frequently nominated for awards including The Barry Award\, The CWA Historical Dagger\, the CWA Gold Dagger and the Theakston’s Prize. For over twenty years he wrote on popular culture for various publications including The Observer and The New York Times and is also the author of several non-fiction books. He is in the process of completing his ninth and tenth novels\, working on one in the afternoon and the other in the morning. \nWeek one: Strategies for finishing\nAn assessment of where you are with your work in progress. Collectively we’ll work on strategies and goals to move your book forward. How can we set reasonable objectives that produce your best work and which are in tune with the rest of our lives? \nWeek two: Shape\nStory\, shape\, tension and theme. Sometimes it’s good to step away from the page and think about the shape of your work in progress. What’s the journey we’re taking the reader on? What lies behind the story we’re telling? And what makes a “good” chapter? By refining the shape of our stories we can clear a path to the way ahead. \nWeek three: Getting the details right\, part 1\nCharacter and setting. How can we refine what you have to make sure that characters are clear in the readers’ heads? What creates a strong sense of place? How character and place can help each other along. \nWeek four: Getting the details right\, part 2\nDialogue\, action and voice. Tips on how to sharpen dialogue and to improve its readability\, on how to create scenes in which things happen and finally\, how to strengthen the all-important “voice” of our book. \n Week five: Re-writing and editing\nIt’s easy to get lost in the process of re-writing. How to put the lessons learned the previous weeks to practical use to help you create a finished manuscript. We’ll do some practical work on cutting. Plus we’ll look at the role of the hardest bit of all; the book title. \n Week six: The submission process\nWhat should your manuscript look like? How to present and format your work. We’ll also discuss the world into which you’re sending it; how agencies work\, how they deal with submissions and how you should navigate this arcane world.

SUMMARY:The Shape of a Novel: A Masterclass with Jacob Ross
DESCRIPTION:Award-winning author\, Jacob Ross is widely regarded as one of the UK’s most exceptional creative-writing teachers and we are delighted to welcome him to New Writing South for an exclusive masterclass on novel-writing. Even the most experienced writers can sometimes stumble when approaching longform fiction\, especially when it comes to structuring a novel\, so the heart of the story powerfully shines through. What can we do as writers to make sure our narratives hold their shape and become publication-ready? In this masterclass\, Jacob will guide us through the basic narrative principles as they apply to the development of the novel\, examining the dramatic under-structure that upholds a successful work of fiction\, and in doing so enable us to discover the right shape of novel for the narrative we want to create. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to learn direct from a master of the craft right here on the doorstep. \nA limited number of bursary places are available for this workshop for writers who cannot afford the full price.
